He was known as a tireless performer, averaging over 300 concerts a year. His talent for improvisation helped the trumpet emerge as a solo instrument, but he was also a masterful accompanist and ensemble player. Beyond being an instrumentalist virtuoso, he also pioneered jazz style vocals and popularized scat style voals, recording hit songs, many of which have become jazz standards, for five decades. He lived in New York on and off, with detours in Chicago, Los Angeles and Eurpe before finally settling in this house. He moved to New York in 1924 to play with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, the top African American band of the day, switching from cornet to trumpet. Armstrong, known to many simply as Satchmo and widely recognized as the founding father of jazz, was born in a poor section of New Orleans known as “the Battlefield” on August 4, 1901.
